Yes, it's that time again, my e-newsletter or another e-newsletter filling up your inbox. With so many newsletters coming in you probably are having a hard time finding important emails. Did you know you can manage your inbox more effectively with a little-known trick?
Gmail offers a handy feature known as the "+ trick" or "plus addressing." This trick allows you to create unlimited variations of your Gmail address without setting up additional accounts. Here’s a brief overview of what it is and how you can use it.
What is the Gmail + Trick?
The Gmail + trick involves adding a plus sign ("+") followed by any string of characters to your existing Gmail address. For example, if your email is john.doe@gmail.com, you can use addresses like john.doe+news@gmail.com or john.doe+shopping@gmail.com. Emails sent to these addresses will still arrive in your main inbox, but you can filter and organize them more efficiently.
How to Use Gmail Plus Addressing
Sign Up for Services: When you sign up for newsletters, online shopping accounts, or other services, use a plus address to keep track of where emails are coming from.
For instance, use john.doe+amazon@gmail.com for Amazon purchases.
Filter Emails: You can set up filters in Gmail to automatically label, archive, or forward emails based on the plus addresses you use. This helps keep your inbox organized and ensures important emails are easy to find.
Go to Gmail settings by clicking on the gear icon and selecting "See all settings."
Navigate to the "Filters and Blocked Addresses" tab and click on "Create a new filter."
Enter your plus address in the "To" field (e.g., john.doe+news@gmail.com).
Choose the actions you want Gmail to take when emails are sent to that address (e.g., apply a label, skip the inbox, mark it as important).
Track Spam and Unwanted Emails: If you start receiving spam to a specific plus address, you can easily identify the source and take appropriate action, such as unsubscribing or blocking the sender.
Manage Projects: For different projects or roles, use plus addresses to separate related emails. For example, john.doe+projectA@gmail.com for one project and john.doe+projectB@gmail.com for another.
Benefits of Using Gmail Plus Addressing
Organization: Helps keep your inbox organized by categorizing emails automatically.
Spam Management: Makes it easier to track and control spam.
Flexibility: No need to create multiple accounts for different purposes.
Privacy: Allows you to give unique email addresses to different services without revealing your actual email address.
Using the Gmail + trick is a simple yet powerful way to enhance your email management, ensuring that your inbox remains tidy and your emails are easier to handle.
