During a recent mentoring call, someone asked, “What is SEO?” It’s such a great question because many people are new to online business and may not know. While the speaker gave a quick response and suggested checking out YouTube for more details, I wanted to provide a simple explanation right here in this newsletter—and share three actionable tips for making SEO work for your small business.


What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s the process of making your website or content easier for search engines (like Google) to find and show to people searching for information. Imagine Google as a giant library, and your website is a book. SEO helps your book land on the library’s front shelf instead of being hidden in the back corner.


By optimizing your content with the right keywords, structure, and links, you’re essentially telling search engines, “Hey, this is what my content is about, and it’s valuable!” When done right, SEO can help more people discover your business online.


Three Simple SEO Tips for Small Business Owners:


1. Focus on Keywords:

Keywords are the words or phrases people type into search engines to find what they need. For example, if you’re a baker, keywords might include “best bakery near me” or “custom birthday cakes.” Use tools like Google’s Keyword Planner to find relevant terms, and include them naturally in your website copy, blog posts, and headlines.


2. Optimize Your Website:

Make sure your site is easy to navigate and loads quickly. Search engines love fast, user-friendly websites. Also, include clear titles and descriptions on every page—these are like mini-ads that help search engines (and users) understand what your page is about.


3. Create High-Quality Content:

Consistently post valuable content that answers your audience’s questions or solves their problems. Whether it’s blog posts, videos, or FAQs, the more helpful your content, the more likely people are to visit—and the more search engines will prioritize your site.
